Anxiety is not a flaw. It is the nervous system’s natural threat detection system, designed to keep you alert, prepared, and protected. It often shows up when something feels uncertain, risky, or emotionally unsafe. Your mind begins scanning for what could go wrong, trying to prepare you before harm has a chance to occur.
While this response can be helpful in short bursts, anxiety can become exhausting when the alarm never turns off. Instead of responding to present danger, the system becomes stuck in anticipation. Thoughts race through worst case scenarios, the body remains tense, sleep becomes elusive, and the mind struggles to rest. Over time, anxiety stops protecting and begins restricting, leaving you feeling trapped inside your own vigilance.
At its core, anxiety is not asking to be eliminated. It is asking for safety.
Beneath anxious symptoms often lies a deep need for predictability, reassurance, relational attunement, and permission to rest without fear. When those needs go unmet, the nervous system stays on high alert, even when there is no immediate threat.
